Angle of View (Diagonal FOV)

Framing Field Dimensions (at distance)

35mm Full-Frame Equivalent

1.0x Crop Factor

Optical Viewing Cone Visualization

How it works

  1. Select your camera sensor format (Full Frame 35mm, APS-C Sony/Canon/Fuji, Micro 4/3, 1-inch, or Smartphone).
  2. Enter your lens focal length in millimeters (mm).
  3. Specify the distance to your subject in meters or feet.
  4. The calculator computes horizontal, vertical, and diagonal angles of view (FOV in degrees), 35mm equivalent focal length, and the physical framed dimensions at that distance.

The formula

Angle of View (FOV) = 2 × arctan( Sensor Dimension / (2 × Focal Length) )

Framed Field Width = Subject Distance × (Sensor Width / Focal Length)

FAQ

What is the relationship between focal length and field of view?

Lens focal length is inversely proportional to field of view (FOV). Shorter focal lengths (e.g. 16mm or 24mm) produce wider angles of view, while longer focal lengths (e.g. 85mm or 200mm telephoto) narrow the field of view to magnify distant subjects.

How does sensor size (crop factor) affect field of view?

Smaller sensors (like APS-C with 1.5x crop or Micro Four Thirds with 2.0x crop) capture only the central portion of the lens image circle, resulting in a narrower field of view equivalent to a longer focal length on a 35mm full-frame camera.

What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and diagonal FOV?

Horizontal FOV measures the angular width of the frame, vertical FOV measures the frame height, and diagonal FOV measures the corner-to-corner angle across the image sensor.

How can I calculate the physical dimensions of the frame at a specific distance?

Using trigonometry: Frame Width = 2 × Subject Distance × tan(Horizontal FOV / 2) = Subject Distance × (Sensor Width / Focal Length).
