Estimated Driving Range

Average Efficiency

Energy Consumption

Watt-hours per mile

How it works

  1. Enter your vehicle usable battery pack capacity in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  2. Choose your driving speed profile (City stop-and-go, Mixed suburban, or Highway/Interstate speeds).
  3. Adjust for outdoor ambient temperature (Freezing winter, Mild, or Summer heat) and HVAC usage.
  4. The calculator models aerodynamic drag and thermal loads to project real-world range in miles and kilometers.

The formula

Estimated Range (Miles) = Available Battery Energy (Wh) / Effective Consumption (Wh/mi)

Efficiency (mi/kWh) = 1,000 / Effective Consumption (Wh/mi)

FAQ

Why does EV range drop significantly in winter weather?

Cold ambient temperatures increase lithium-ion internal battery resistance, make cold air denser (increasing aerodynamic drag), and require high electrical power from resistance heaters or heat pumps to warm the passenger cabin without waste engine heat.

How does driving speed affect electric vehicle efficiency?

Aerodynamic drag increases quadratically with vehicle speed (v²). Cruising at 80 mph (130 km/h) consumes roughly 35% to 45% more kilowatt-hours per mile than cruising at 55 mph (90 km/h).

What is the 80% to 10% road trip charging window?

On long road trips, EV DC fast chargers charge at peak speeds between 10% and 80% state of charge. Estimating range within this 70% usable window allows efficient road trip charging stop planning.

What is considered good EV efficiency?

An efficiency of 3.5 to 4.5 miles/kWh (approx 14 to 18 kWh/100km) is considered highly efficient for sedans and compact crossovers, whereas large 3-row SUVs and electric pickup trucks typically achieve 2.0 to 2.5 miles/kWh.
