Charge time
64 kWh from 20% to 80% needs 38.4 kWh; at 7.4 kW with losses that is about 5 hours 45 minutes. The same charge on a 50 kW rapid takes roughly 50 minutes.
How the EV Charging Time Calculator works
- Enter the usable battery capacity, which is a little less than the headline figure.
- Set the charger's real delivered power, not its rated maximum — AC charging is limited by the car's onboard charger.
- Read the estimate as optimistic on DC, since charging speed tapers as the battery fills.
The method
Charge time is the energy needed divided by the power delivered, plus roughly ten percent for conversion and thermal losses.
time (h) = capacity x (target% - start%) / charger power, x ~1.1 for losses
64 kWh x 0.60 = 38.4 kWh; at 7.4 kW that is 5.2 hours before losses, about 5 hours 45 minutes in practice.
FAQ
Why is the last 20% so slow?
Because charging tapers to protect the cells. On a rapid charger, 20 to 80 percent often takes less time than 80 to 100, which is why road-trip advice stops at 80.
Why is my AC charge slower than the charger's rating?
The onboard charger in the car sets the ceiling. An 11 kW wall box delivers 7.4 kW to a car whose onboard charger is single-phase, and no cable will change that.
Does cold weather matter?
Yes. A cold battery accepts charge more slowly and may spend the first minutes heating itself, which is why winter rapid charging is noticeably slower.
How we compare

EV Charging Time Calculator is accurate for AC charging and deliberately conservative about DC, where tapering makes any single figure misleading.
