How it works

The formula
Your target fund is monthly expenses multiplied by your chosen coverage period:

FAQ
How many months of expenses should I save?
3-6 months is the most common guideline, with people in less stable income situations (freelance, commission-based) often aiming for 6-12 months. Choose what feels right for your situation.
Should this include all my expenses or just essentials?
Essentials only — rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments. Discretionary spending (dining out, subscriptions) usually gets cut first in an actual emergency.
Where should an emergency fund be kept?
Somewhere accessible without penalty, like a high-yield savings account — not invested in the stock market, since you need it available exactly when markets might also be down.
Is my financial data uploaded anywhere?
No — every calculation happens locally in your browser.

Budgeting apps can track this too, but require linking accounts. Emergency Fund Calculator gives you the same target and timeline from numbers you already know.
