How the Drywall Sheet Calculator works
- Measure the room and decide whether the ceiling is included — it changes the count substantially.
- Deduct large openings, but not small ones; a window smaller than a sheet rarely saves a whole sheet.
- Add 10% wastage, more for a room with many openings or angles, since offcuts rarely fit anywhere useful.
The method
Sheet count is total area divided by sheet area, rounded up, with wastage added — but offcut geometry means the practical figure is usually higher than the arithmetic.
sheets = ceil(area ÷ sheet area) × (1 + wastage)
A room needing 18.2 sheets by area typically consumes 20, because a 300 mm offcut is not a piece you can use on the next wall.
FAQ
Why does the arithmetic underestimate?
Because sheets are cut to fit and the offcuts rarely suit the next position. Area-based counts assume perfect nesting, which never happens on a real wall with a door and a socket in it.
Should I hang sheets horizontally or vertically?
Horizontally on walls in most residential work — it puts the long joint at a convenient height and produces fewer butt joints, which are the harder ones to finish invisibly.
How much compound do I need?
Roughly what the calculation says for the joints, plus more than you expect for the second and third coats. Compound is cheap relative to a second trip, so over-order slightly.
