How the DRIP calculator works

  1. Enter your initial investment, the share price, and the stock's current dividend yield.
  2. Enter estimated annual growth rates for both the dividend and the share price, and how many years to project.
  3. The calculator simulates each year: dividends are paid based on shares held, immediately reinvested to buy more shares at that year's price, then both the dividend and share price grow for the next year.

The method

Each year, the dividend paid equals shares held times the per-share dividend; that amount is divided by the (grown) share price to get additional shares purchased. This compounds two ways at once — the share count grows from reinvestment, and the per-share dividend grows on top of that:

new shares = (shares held × dividend per share) ÷ new share price

FAQ

What does DRIP stand for?

Dividend Reinvestment Plan — instead of taking dividend payments as cash, they’re automatically used to buy more shares, which then earn their own dividends. That compounding effect is what this calculator projects.

Does this account for taxes on dividends?

No — this is a pre-tax projection. Depending on your account type (e.g. a taxable brokerage account vs. a tax-advantaged retirement account) and jurisdiction, dividends may be taxable even when reinvested rather than taken as cash.

Are the growth rates guaranteed?

No. Dividend growth and share price growth are both estimates you provide — real markets don’t grow in a smooth, constant line like this projection assumes. Use conservative assumptions and treat the result as a rough guide, not a promise.

Is my investment data sent anywhere?

No. Every projection is calculated instantly in your browser as you type — nothing is sent to Online Tool Store or any other server.
