The formula
dividend yield = (annual dividend per share ÷ share price) × 100
Example: a $45 share paying $1.35 per year in dividends has a yield of (1.35 ÷ 45) × 100 = 3%. Holding 200 shares at that rate would generate $270 in annual dividend income.
FAQ
Should I use trailing or forward dividend for this calculation?
Either works — enter whichever annual dividend per share figure you're interested in. "Trailing yield" uses the last 12 months of actual payments; "forward yield" uses the company's announced upcoming rate. Just be consistent about which one you're comparing across stocks.
Does monthly income assume dividends are paid monthly?
No — most stocks pay quarterly, not monthly. The monthly figure is simply the annual income divided by 12, shown as an average for budgeting purposes, not a prediction of when payments actually arrive.
Is a higher yield always better?
Not necessarily. An unusually high yield can signal a falling share price (since yield rises as price falls) or an unsustainable payout, not always a better investment — yield is one input among several when evaluating a stock.
