At 14 months: walking independently and using a few single words sit within the typical range, which for both spans several months either side of the average.

How the Developmental Milestone Tracker works

  1. Enter the child's age and record which milestones you have observed.
  2. Read the ranges rather than the averages — typical development spans months, not weeks.
  3. Bring the record to a routine check-up, where a professional can interpret it in context.

FAQ

My child hasn't reached a milestone — should I worry?

Milestone ranges are wide, and reaching one later than average is common and usually unremarkable. What matters more is the overall pattern and any loss of a skill previously gained. A health visitor or paediatrician is the right person to ask, and asking early is never wrong.

Why do different sources give different ages?

Because they use different data and different thresholds — some publish the average age, some the age by which most children have reached it. Comparing an average from one source against a threshold from another produces needless worry.

Is this a screening tool?

No. It is a record to help you notice patterns and remember what to raise at an appointment. Formal developmental screening uses validated instruments administered by professionals.
