How the currency exchange markup calculator works
- Enter the amount you're exchanging, the mid-market rate, and the rate actually offered to you.
- Add any flat fee charged separately, if applicable.
- See how much you'd receive, what a fair-rate exchange would give you, and the hidden markup cost.
FAQ
What is the mid-market rate?
It's the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of a currency pair on the global market - the rate you'd see quoted on Google or a currency converter, without any markup.
Why do banks and exchange services offer a worse rate?
Most currency exchange providers build their profit into the exchange rate itself (a markup) rather than charging a separate visible fee, which can make the true cost hard to spot.
What counts as a good markup?
Under 1% is excellent (typical of low-cost providers), 1-3% is moderate, and above 3% is high - common at airport kiosks and some traditional banks.
Where do I find the current mid-market rate?
Search "[currency A] to [currency B]" on a search engine, or check any independent currency rate source, then compare it against what your bank or exchange counter is offering.
