Credit Card Payoff Calculator

Calculate how many months it takes to pay off a credit card balance, the total interest you'll pay, and your projected payoff date. Runs entirely in your browser.

Example shown — enter your own balance, APR, and payment.

How it works

  1. Enter your current balance, your card's APR, and the fixed amount you plan to pay each month.
  2. See how many months it takes, the total interest you'll pay, and the projected payoff date.
  3. Raise the monthly payment to see how much faster — and cheaper — payoff gets.

The formula

Each month, interest is charged on the remaining balance, and whatever's left of your payment goes to principal:

Monthly rate = APR ÷ 12
Interest this month = Balance × Monthly rate
Balance = Balance − (Payment − Interest this month)

That's repeated month by month until the balance reaches zero — the same way your card issuer's statement calculates it.

FAQ

Why does it say my payment will never pay off the balance?

If your monthly payment is less than or equal to that month's interest charge, the balance can never shrink — you'd be paying interest forever without touching the principal. Raise the payment above the "minimum interest" amount shown in the error.

Does this assume my APR stays the same the whole time?

Yes — it assumes a constant APR and a constant monthly payment with no new purchases added to the balance. A real card's APR can change, and any new spending resets the math.

How is this different from just paying the minimum?

Card issuers usually calculate the minimum payment as a small percentage of the balance (often 1-3%), which shrinks every month as the balance drops — stretching payoff out for years. This calculator uses a fixed dollar amount instead, which pays off faster and predictably.

Is my financial information sent anywhere?

No. Every number stays in your browser — the calculation is plain arithmetic, run locally, with nothing uploaded.
