Estimated clearance
Cockcroft-Gault for a 54-year-old female, 68 kg, creatinine 1.1 mg/dL: approximately 57 mL/min.
How the Creatinine Clearance Calculator works
- Enter age, sex, and weight — Cockcroft-Gault uses body weight directly, so the weight you choose changes the result.
- Add the serum creatinine value with its units, since mg/dL and µmol/L differ by a factor of about 88.4.
- Read the estimate as an approximation and discuss it with a clinician rather than acting on it.
The method
Cockcroft-Gault estimates clearance from creatinine, adjusted for age, weight, and sex, because creatinine production falls with muscle mass.
CrCl = ((140 - age) x weight kg) / (72 x serum creatinine mg/dL), x 0.85 if female
For a 54-year-old female at 68 kg with creatinine 1.1: ((140-54) x 68) / (72 x 1.1) x 0.85 ≈ 57 mL/min.
FAQ
Which weight should be used?
It depends on the patient and on local protocol — actual, ideal, or adjusted body weight give materially different answers in obesity, and drug dosing guidance usually specifies which to use.
Is Cockcroft-Gault still used?
Yes, particularly for drug dosing, where many licences were written against it. Other equations such as CKD-EPI are generally preferred for staging kidney disease.
Can I use this to change my medication?
No. This is an educational calculation with real limitations — unstable creatinine, extremes of muscle mass, and pregnancy all break it. Dosing decisions belong to a clinician.

Creatinine Clearance Calculator is an educational reference for the Cockcroft-Gault equation — it is not clinical decision support, and dosing is a clinician's call.
