Refresh priority
Last updated 29 months ago on a fast-moving topic with declining traffic: high priority. An evergreen page of the same age with flat traffic scores low.
How the Content Freshness Calculator works
- List the pages with their last meaningful update date — not the date a typo was fixed.
- Set how quickly each topic changes and what its traffic has been doing.
- Work down the priority list, since a fast-moving page from last year usually needs attention before an evergreen page from four years ago.
The method
Priority combines how stale a page is with how quickly its subject changes and whether it is losing traffic.
priority = age x volatility weight x traffic trend factor
Age alone ranks an evergreen reference page above a pricing guide that went out of date in six months.
FAQ
Does updating a date help rankings?
Changing a displayed date without changing the content does nothing useful and is easy to detect. What helps is the content actually being current — a refreshed date is a consequence, not a tactic.
How often should content be refreshed?
It depends entirely on the topic. A tax guide needs annual revision; a piece on knot tying may never need it. That is why volatility is an input rather than a fixed interval.
What counts as a real refresh?
New information, corrected facts, updated examples and screenshots, and removal of what is no longer true. Rewording paragraphs to look different is not a refresh.
