How it works
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Character, word, and no-space character counts update on every keystroke, alongside a progress bar for each social media or SEO limit below.
- A bar turns amber near a limit and red once you're over it, with the exact number of characters left (or over) shown underneath.
- Click "Copy count" to copy the character and word summary, ready to paste elsewhere.
How the limits are checked
Each platform row compares your text's character count against that platform's published limit and turns the result into a percentage:
Usage % = (character count ÷ platform limit) × 100
Example: a 250-character post checked against X's 280-character limit is at 89% (250 ÷ 280), so the bar stays brand-colored right up to 90%, then turns amber as a heads-up before it turns red at 281 characters and up.
FAQ
Does my text get sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser as you type — nothing you paste or write here is uploaded, logged, or stored anywhere.
Why might this count differ from the counter on X, Instagram, or LinkedIn?
This tool counts plain characters (JavaScript's string length). Some platforms count differently under the hood — X, for example, treats every URL as a fixed 23 characters regardless of its real length, and some platforms count certain emoji or accented characters as two units instead of one. Treat the platform limits here as a close, practical guide rather than the platform's exact internal count.
Are the platform limits kept up to date?
They reflect each platform's published limit as of when this tool was last updated. Platforms do change these numbers occasionally — if you spot one that's out of date, that's useful to know, but always trust the platform's own compose box as the final word before publishing something limit-critical.
What counts as a "character"?
Every letter, number, punctuation mark, space, and line break counts as one character. Spaces are counted separately in the "No spaces" stat so you can see both numbers at a glance.
Is there a limit to how much text I can paste in?
No hard limit — it runs on your device, so it's bounded only by your browser's memory. Very long text (tens of thousands of characters) may make the live count feel slightly less instant.
