How the Chapter Word Count Tracker works
- Enter each chapter with its current word count.
- Set a total target, and a per-chapter target if the book has a regular rhythm.
- Look at the outliers — a chapter three times the median is usually two chapters, and a very short one is often a scene that has not grown yet.

Should chapters be a consistent length?
Not strictly, but wild variation is usually a structural signal rather than a stylistic choice. A chapter at three times the median often contains a natural break the draft has not found yet.
What is a normal novel length?
It varies enormously by genre and market — a category romance and an epic fantasy have very different expectations. Check recent comparable titles in your genre rather than a universal number.
Does word count measure progress?
Partly. It measures drafting, not revision — a good editing day can reduce the count. Tracking it is useful for momentum and misleading as a measure of quality.
