What is a board foot?
A board foot is a unit of lumber volume equal to a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 1 foot long — the standard way hardwood lumber is priced and sold in North America, regardless of the actual board's dimensions.
What's the board feet formula?
Board feet = (thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet) ÷ 12. Multiply by the number of identical boards to get your total order quantity.
Should I use nominal or actual lumber dimensions?
Rough-sawn hardwood is typically sold and priced by its nominal (rough) thickness even after it's surfaced thinner, so use the nominal thickness quoted by your supplier, not the final planed thickness, when estimating cost.
