How the bill split calculator works

The formula
person's total = (sum of their item shares) × (1 + tax % + tip %)
FAQ
How is this different from just splitting the total evenly?
An even split assumes everyone ordered the same amount, which usually isn't true. This tool lets you assign each item to specific people, so someone who only ordered a salad doesn't pay the same as someone who ordered a full meal plus drinks.
What happens to items shared by multiple people?
The item's price is divided evenly among everyone it's checked for — check a shared appetizer for the whole table, or just the people who actually ate it.
How are tax and tip split?
Proportionally, based on each person's share of the subtotal — someone whose items make up 40% of the bill also pays 40% of the tax and tip, which is the fairest common approach.
Is the bill information saved anywhere?
