How often should a beekeeper inspect their beehives?
During the active spring and summer foraging season, apiary inspections should typically occur every 7 to 10 days to check queen laying status, monitor swarm impulse cells, and manage honey super space. In winter, avoid opening hives to preserve internal heat.
What are the main indicators of a healthy honeybee queen?
Seeing the queen is ideal, but seeing single tiny white eggs standing upright in the center of comb cells and healthy C-shaped glistening larvae confirms a laying queen was present within the last 3 days.
What constitutes a good brood pattern?
A healthy brood pattern is dense and concentric with few empty "shotgun" cells (over 85-90% solid capped brood), surrounded by a perimeter halo of bee bread (pollen) and capped honey.
When should emergency feeding (sugar syrup) be provided?
If autumn honey stores drop below 40 to 60 lbs (approx 6 to 8 deep frames of honey) or during early spring dearth periods before nectar flows begin, feed 2:1 or 1:1 white sugar syrup.
