Zone chart

19/42 FG (45%). Best: left corner (7/8). Worst: top of key (2/7). Attempted 3-pointer distribution shows favor for wings.

How the Basketball Shot Chart Tracker works

  1. Choose a zone layout — fewer zones reach a usable sample size faster.
  2. Record every attempt, including the ones taken out of rhythm. A log of only good attempts measures nothing.
  3. Ignore any zone with fewer than about 25 attempts. Percentages on small samples swing wildly and mislead.

The method

A shooting percentage on a small number of attempts carries a wide margin of error.

effective FG% = (FG made + 0.5 x 3P made) / attempts

Effective field goal percentage weights three-pointers by their extra value, which is why a 35% three-point shooter can be more valuable than a 50% mid-range shooter.

FAQ

How many attempts before a percentage means anything?

More than most people assume. Under about 25 attempts in a zone the margin of error is wider than the differences you are looking for. Two hundred is where zone percentages start being stable.

Why use effective field goal percentage?

Because a three-pointer is worth more. Raw percentage treats all shots equally and undervalues three-point shooting, which is why the weighted version is the standard measure.

Does practice tracking transfer to games?

Partly. Practice percentages are almost always higher, since game shots are contested and taken under fatigue. The useful comparison is between your own zones, not between practice and game.
