How it works
- Enter your aquarium water volume in US Gallons or Liters.
- Input your current liquid test kit Nitrate (NO₃⁻) reading in parts per million (ppm).
- Select your target safe threshold (Community ≤20 ppm, Shrimp ≤10 ppm, Reef ≤5 ppm) and tap water nitrate content.
- The calculator computes the exact water change volume, replacement percentage, 5-gallon bucket count, and resulting post-change nitrate concentration.
The formula
Water Change % = ((Current Nitrate − Target Nitrate) / (Current Nitrate − Source Tap Nitrate)) × 100
Replacement Volume = Tank Volume × (Water Change % / 100)
FAQ
Why are regular water changes necessary in aquariums?
In closed aquarium ecosystems, the biological nitrogen cycle converts toxic ammonia (NH₃) and nitrite (NO₂⁻) into nitrate (NO₃⁻). Because most freshwater filters lack anaerobic de-nitrifying bacteria, regular water changes are the primary method to dilute accumulating nitrates and replenish trace minerals.
What is a safe nitrate level for freshwater and reef tanks?
Freshwater community tanks should maintain nitrates under 20 ppm (and strictly under 40 ppm). Sensitive freshwater dwarf shrimp and planted tanks thrive below 10 ppm, while delicate saltwater SPS coral reefs require nitrates below 5 ppm.
Why shouldn't you change 100% of aquarium water at once?
Changing more than 50% to 75% of tank water at once can induce osmotic shock and pH temperature crashes that stress or kill delicate fish and beneficial biofilter bacteria. Splitting large water changes across several days is safer.
How do you calculate post-water change nitrate dilution?
The dilution formula is: New Nitrate = (Remaining Water Fraction × Tank Nitrate) + (Changed Water Fraction × Tap Water Nitrate).
