What is the difference between IATA and ICAO codes?
IATA codes are three letters used in tickets and baggage tags. ICAO codes are four letters used operationally by air traffic control, and their first letters encode the region.
Why do some cities have a code of their own?
Multi-airport cities have a metropolitan code — LON covers all London airports, NYC covers New York's. Booking against a city code searches all of them, which is sometimes wanted and sometimes not.
Why do codes seem unrelated to the city name?
Many predate the current name or come from an old aerodrome name. Codes are historically assigned and rarely change once printed on the world's baggage systems.
