Aircraft Weight and Balance Calculator

Compute total aircraft weight and center of gravity from empty weight, pilot/passenger, baggage, and fuel stations, and check the result against a sample CG envelope.

🔒 This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to a server.

Example figures modeled after a typical light single-engine aircraft. Always use your specific aircraft's POH weight and balance data for real flight planning.

How the Aircraft Weight and Balance Calculator works

  1. Each loading station (pilot/passengers, baggage, fuel) has a weight you can edit and a fixed arm distance from the reference datum.
  2. The tool multiplies each station's weight by its arm to get a moment, then sums all weights and moments.
  3. Center of gravity = total moment ÷ total weight, checked against a sample forward/aft CG envelope that shifts with total weight.

FAQ

What is "moment" and why does it matter?

Moment is weight multiplied by arm (the distance of that weight from a reference datum line). Summing every station's moment and dividing by total weight gives the center of gravity — the single point where the aircraft's weight effectively balances.

Is the CG envelope shown here accurate for my aircraft?

No — it's a simplified example envelope modeled loosely after a typical light single-engine trainer, meant to illustrate how forward/aft CG limits shift with weight. Always use the actual weight and balance data from your aircraft's Pilot's Operating Handbook for real flight planning.

What happens if my loading is outside the envelope?

Flying outside the CG envelope makes the aircraft handle unpredictably — too far forward can make it nose-heavy and hard to flare on landing, too far aft can make it dangerously unstable in pitch. The tool flags this, but redistributing weight (moving baggage, adjusting fuel, or swapping seats) is the real fix.
