How the Model Comparison Table works
- List the options and the criteria that actually decide the choice.
- Weight the criteria before scoring, so the weights are not chosen to justify a preferred answer.
- Read where the overall winner and the weighted-criteria winner disagree — that gap is the real decision.
The method
A weighted comparison multiplies each score by the importance of its criterion and sums the result, so a strong showing on something you barely care about cannot carry an option.
total = Σ (score x weight) / Σ weight
An option scoring 5 on a weight-1 criterion and 2 on a weight-5 criterion totals 2.5 — lower than a steady 3 across the board.
FAQ
Should I set weights before or after scoring?
Before, always. Weights chosen after the scores are visible tend to be tuned until the preferred option wins, which turns the table into a justification rather than a decision.
What if two options tie?
A tie usually means the criteria are missing the thing that actually differentiates them. Add the criterion you keep thinking about but have not written down.
Is the highest total always the right choice?
No. A score is a summary of your judgement, not a replacement for it. Use the table to expose disagreement between criteria, not to outsource the decision.
